Level 4 Accredited Qualification

Sight Impaired (SI) learners have the same potential to attain and achieve as other pupils, if provided with an appropriate level of support and access to the curriculum.

A collaborative educational initiative by Angel Eyes NI and Ulster University have developed a new programme for Classroom Assistants (CAs) supporting children with Vision Impairments.

This funded 10-week Level 4 University accredited programme uses blended learning and includes online learning and workshops.  The topics covered include ‘VI and education’, ‘assistive technology’, ‘supporting the independent learner’, ‘adapting learning materials’ and ‘modifications for the learning environment’.

Vision Support Teachers

The Vision Support Teacher is a qualified teacher with additional training in children with a visual impairment.

Your child’s Ophthalmologist will refer your child to a Vision Support Teacher who will support your child from referral (maybe offering advice about early visual stimulation) right up to 18 years where required.

Vision Support Teachers aim to:

  • Advise and support parents about the implications of  their child’s eye condition

  • Promote the inclusion of children with a visual  impairment within mainstream pre-school and school placements

  • Facilitate access to NI curriculum

  • Provide support and training to the classroom  assistants and teachers of pupils with a visual  impairment

  • Angel eyes NI will be able to put you in touch with a Vision Support teacher in your area if your child has not had contact with one.
