The Campaign

Visual impairment is a disability that is often not obvious. As a result, young people with visual impairment often feel unsupported and left behind. Research suggests that two thirds of people with a visual impairment have experienced loneliness due to their impairment.

Angel Eyes NI supports over 700 children and young people with visual impairment. Over the past year 100% of young people, engaged with on a 1:1 basis, expressed a great appreciation for the use of QR codes in the hospitality world. This appreciation came from their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic when QR codes were widely used. Their use proved highly successful for our young people as they could view menus in advance of visiting a venue, and use assistive technology to read the menu independently, allowing them to go alone to a coffee shop or to meet a friend for dinner. This reduces potential anxiety caused by trying to read an inaccessible traditional menu/board. Research highlights that children and young people with a vision impairment are three times more likely to experience mental health and wellbeing difficulties. Therefore, this is one small way to greatly improve their experience and positively impact their wellbeing.
